According to German officials, 1,490,473 visa applications were handled by the nation's visa offices at its embassies overseas in 2022, with a sizable portion of them being for national visas. Germany's Federal Foreign Office said that in 2022, the government granted 393,083 national visas in total. A considerable rise over 2021, when the government issued 304,773 national visas, can be seen in this figure. The German authorities also revealed that in addition to the number of national visas issued in 2022, they also processed a total of 444,154 national visa applications in that year. The same highlighted the fact that in 2022 there were 27% more applications processed than there were in 2021. Furthermore, for the first time since the pre-pandemic period, more national visa applications were processed than there were visas issued. “In 2022, the number of national visas issued amounted to 393,083 (2021: 304,773). A total of 444,154 applications for national visas were processed. In 2022, the number of processed applications not only increased again by another 27 per cent compared to the previous year; the pre-pandemic level was also exceeded for the first time by almost 60,000 applications (+15.42 per cent)” the statement of the Federal Foreign Office reads. As data provided by the Federal Foreign Office shows, the highest number of national visas in 2022 was issued for employment purposes. In 2022, Germany awarded 152,336 national work visas to foreigners coming to the country for employment-related reasons. According to statistics, the top ten nationalities for national work visas in 2022 were Albanians, Turks, Serbians, Bosnians, Kosovars, and Indians. The numbers of national work visas issued to these nationals are as follows:

The second-highest number of national visas was issued for spouse reunification in 2022. Data shows that Germany issued a total of 71,129 national visas for spouse reunification last year, with the highest number being granted to nationals of India, Türkiye, Lebanon, Russia, Kosovo, and Iran:

In addition to the previously mentioned information, it was revealed that in 2022, national visas for study were issued in the third-highest number. According to data, Germany issued 71,018 national study visas in total last year. Indian, Turkish, and Chinese nationals received most of these visas (17,268, 7,176, and 7,077), respectively. According to statistics, Germany issued a total of 40,422 national visas for child reunification in 2022, as well as 26,903 national visas for humanitarian causes, among other things.
