Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Cape Verde, who had their visa requirements simplified in 2014, are among the nations that obtained visa facilitation accords with the European Union in the previous ten years.
The EU entered into visa facilitation agreements with Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Cape Verde. These agreements did not necessarily include a visa waiver, but the fees for Schengen visas for citizens of Armenia and Azerbaijan were reduced from €80 to €35, while no fee changes have been made for citizens of Cape Verde, with whom the agreement was only reached in 2021.
Azerbaijani nationals spent 17.2 million euros on visa applications between 2009 and 2014, applicants who were refused visas wasted 913,760 euros. On average, Azerbaijanis spent 3.4 million euros on visas during this five-year period. Based on these calculations, Azerbaijanis save up to 18.9 million euros in total as they have to pay less visa fees.
Similarly, Armenians save a total of 22.1 million euros, or about 2.2 million euros per year, by reducing visa fees to 35 euros. This means that the visa fee will cost about 1.7 million euros (compared to the same number of applications as 2009-2014) instead of the 4 million euros that Armenians would have to pay without a deal. facilitate visa issuance.
Besart Bajrami, founder of SchengenVisaInfo.com, points out that the average number of visa applications by Armenians was particularly high in 2013, with 108,362 visa applications.
“Armenians have spent €8.6 million in 2013 alone, with the average amount spent on visa applications from 2009 to 2012 (€2.8 million) being only one-third of the spending that was recorded in 2013,” Bajrami explained.
Contrary to Armenians, however, Cabo Verdeans continue to pay the same costs, demonstrating that the amounts spent on visa applications are disproportionately high when compared to the other two nationalities.
According to Schengen Statistics statistics, 17,572 visa requests from this nationality were made in 2022, which is obviously more than the 13,393 requests submitted in 2010, the most requests submitted during this time period.
More precisely, Cabo Verdeans have paid €1.4 million in visa Schengen costs, with €404,400 disappearing in the form of 5,055 applications that were turned down, representing 28.7% of all applications.
Cabo Verdeans are believed to have paid a total of €4.2 million since 2009, or around €302,120 each year, on applications that were declined. Spending on visa applications in general is much more costly, with an estimated €15.4 million being spent.
The cost of applying for a visa for Cabo Verdeans can total €1.1 million per year if they pay €80 for each application and submit 13,818 on average per year.
