Net migration record high

November 24, 2023
Net migration has hit a record high, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). It is estimated to have hit 745,000 in the year to last December, revised figures show. The previous estimate for the year had been 606,000, but the ONS has since raised this in light of “unexpected patterns” in the behaviour of migrants. The new figures also reveal that net migration to the UK stood at a provisional 672,000 in the year to June 2023, up from 607,000 in the previous 12 months. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is confronting mounting political pressure to cut Britain’s reliance on foreign workers after net immigration hit a record 745,000 last year despite years of Conservative pledges to cut immigration. The government has come under renewed criticism as net migration reaches record levels in Britain. It remains to be seen what steps the government will take to control the net migration record numbers ahead of the elections.
