Rochdale victory for George Galloway “dark day for Jewish community in this country”

“A dark day for the Jewish community in this country,” according to the Board of Deputies of British Jews, was George Galloway’s victory in the Rochdale by-election.

Following his by-election victory, Mr. Galloway was declared to be “shunned as a pariah by all parliamentarians” by The Board, the UK’s largest Jewish community organization.

On a pro-Palestinian ticket, he received 40% of the vote on Thursday. This is his fourth trip back to Westminster, this time on behalf of the Workers Party of Britain.

An environmental protestor briefly cut off Mr. Galloway’s victory speech, accusing him of being a denial of climate change.

Supporters of the left-wing politician quickly drowned out her protest with chants of “Galloway! Galloway!” until security hauled her away.

An further activist attempted to hurl orange confetti at him, a color strongly linked to Just Stop Oil, but their attempt was unsuccessful.

According to a Board of Deputies spokesman:

“George Galloway is a demagogue and conspiracy theorist who has brought the politics of division and hate to every place he has ever stood for Parliament.

“His election is a dark day for the Jewish community in this country, and for British politics in general. We believe he should be shunned as a pariah by all parliamentarians.”

Mr. Galloway has faced criticism on multiple occasions for remarks he has made toward Israel during the course of his nearly four-decade career.

Mr. Galloway “has an atrocious record of baiting the Jewish community,” according to the Campaign Against Antisemitism.

It said: “He has previously and infamously declared Bradford an ‘Israel-free zone’. He said of his previous election loss that ‘the venal, the vile, the racists and the Zionists will all be celebrating’.

“He described David Baddiel, a Jewish comic who is well-known for not closely associating himself with Israel, as a ‘vile Israel fanatic’.

“He claimed that the institutional anti-Semitism within the Labour Party under Jeremy Corbyn was really ‘a disgraceful campaign of Goebbelsian fiction’, in reference to Joseph Goebbels, Hitler’s propagandist.

“He was sacked by TalkRadio over his views. Recently, he has described the atrocity carried out by Hamas on Oct 7 as a ‘concentration camp breakout’ and referred to Hamas terrorists as ‘fighters’.”

The group said it was “extremely concerned by how he may use the platform of the House of Commons in the remaining months of this Parliament”.

This occurs concurrently with the Workers Party of Britain’s deputy leader’s refusal to denounce the Hamas attacks on October 7.

Chris Williamson told the BBC Radio 4 Today program that he was suspended from Labour in 2019 because he felt the party had been “too apologetic” in response to accusations of anti-Semitism.

“What about the Palestinian people that have been massacred over nearly 76 years now, actually, where is the media outrage at that?

“And in international law, oppressed peoples have an absolute right to armed resistance.”

The Rochdale campaign has been dubbed “one of the most divisive in recent times” by Rishi Sunak, who noted that candidates have been complaining about the hostile behavior of Mr. Galloway’s followers.

Threatening someone “doesn’t represent our values of tolerance and respect, and he’s [Mr. Sunak] very clear that he will always defend and champion those values,” according to a Number 10 spokesman.

We reached out to the Rochdale Borough Council and a representative for Mr. Galloway for their thoughts.
