Police remove 34 bodies from a funeral house and arrest a man and a woman

A man and a woman were taken into custody on suspicion of fraud and obstructing a proper and lawful funeral after authorities took thirty-four bodies from a Humberside funeral parlor.

A 46-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman were taken into custody by Humberside Police as part of an inquiry into Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in Hull.

Police received a tip from a member of the public on Wednesday regarding the handling and storage procedures connected to the “care of the deceased,” which sparked initial concerns.

The Hessle Road funeral home was shuttered while police conducted investigations, and several bodies were later taken from the location.

Humberside Police stated in a statement on Sunday afternoon that 34 deceased individuals had now been moved from the funeral home to the mortuary in Hull so that official identification could be done.

The suspects, who were detained by police on Sunday, are suspected of fraud by false representation and fraud by abuse of position.

All three Legacy Independent Funeral Directors, located in East Yorkshire (two in Hull and one in Beverley), still have police cordons in place.

If you have hired the funeral home and you have worries about your loved ones, please get in touch with the police right once, according to the police.

Since a dedicated phone line was established on Friday, more than 350 calls from worried citizens have been placed to the authorities.

Officers are collaborating with the coroner and local authorities.

“Every call we receive is being carefully handled and delicately assessed by a specialist team to ensure we have a thorough understanding of each family’s circumstances,” stated Thom McLoughlin, assistant chief constable of Humberside Police. We promise to respond to every single one of you as quickly as we can.

“Please be reassured that my staff and officers are working around the clock to deal with the unprecedented enquiries generated as a result of this incident.

“Families affected continue to be supported by family liaison officers at what we appreciate is an extremely distressing time for all involved.

“These officers are also working closely with our partners to ensure that families are provided with the most appropriate care and support for their personal circumstances whilst our investigation continues.”

In addition, Humberside Police stated that anyone in need of assistance or direction after reading this report can reach them at a dedicated phone number for victim support. The phone number is 1689-111-0808.

ACC McLoughlin added: “On behalf of all of our police officers and staff, particularly today, on Mother’s Day, our thoughts remain with all families that have been affected because of this incident.

“I know many families will need and want much more information and we will continue to release updates as soon as we are able but cannot jeopardise the ongoing investigation in any way.

“May I take this opportunity to remind the public to show the utmost respect and privacy for any bereaved families and their loved ones within our community.”
