Ibsha Chowdhury elected lord mayor of Worthing Borough Council on May 21st. He is the first Muslim male mayor of the council. Ibsha Chowdhury is also the youngest ever Bangladeshi-born mayor in the UK.

Ibsha was born in Sylhet, Bangladesh. He attended school and college in Sylhet.
In 2000 he married Shuporna and at the age of 21 he moved to England and joined his wife to start life here in Worthing where Shuporna was brought up.
They have lived in Worthing for 22 years and have 4 beautiful children who have been born, raised and in education here in Worthing.
Ibsha started his first employment in Worthing in the manufacturing trade and catering and then moved on to civil service. As their children became older, they took priority and he moved on to becoming self-employed.
Over the years he has experienced many struggles and hardship and having come from a political family background in Bangladesh he put his knowledge and experience in community work. He has done voluntary work for the local food bank.
During the Pandemic, he was a key worker and helped coordinate and supply food to the NHS.
Ibsha has also been a member of the Independent Advisory Group for Sussex Police to tackle community issues and engaged in ways to build a better and safer community.
In 2019, Ibsha joined the Labour Party and became an active member of the team. In 2021, he was selected as a Labour Party Councillor candidate in Castle Ward and then was elected as the first Labour Councillor for Castle Ward in 2022.
Ibsha likes reading books and is passionate about cricket and plays for a local Worthing based club. He is keen to improve the Town’s outdoor activities, making it more accessible and affordable for everyone, young and elderly. He is the Equality Officer at Worthing Town Football Club.
