Seven Labour MPs, including Apsana Begum, a British Bangladeshi MP from Poplar and Limehouse, have had their whips suspended for voting in favour of the two-child cap by supporting an SNP amendment to the King's Speech. The motion to immediately repeal the two-child restriction was defeated by 103 votes to 363. The seven Labour MPs included former shadow chancellor John McDonnell and Rebecca Long-Bailey, Sir Keir's erstwhile leadership contender. Richard Burgon, Ian Byrne, Imran Hussain, Zarah Sultana, and Apsana are also suspended. In a post Ms Sultana, the MP for Coventry South, said: “I have been informed by the Chief Whip & the Labour Party leadership that the whip has been withdrawn from me for voting to scrap the two-child benefit cap, which would lift 330,000 children out of poverty.

“I will always stand up for the most vulnerable in our society.”
