Apple unveils the first preview of its long-awaited iPhone AI

  • The iOS 18.1 developer beta included a new program known as Apple Intelligence

The initial iteration of Apple Intelligence, a set of AI tools that will enhance Siri, create emails and photos automatically, and organise notifications, was made available to the public on Monday.

The iOS 18.1 developer beta included a new program known as Apple Intelligence. Similar releases are also available for the iPad and Mac. At the moment, only authorised Apple developers have access to it. The annual fee of Apple's developer program is $99.

Additionally, after updating, users will need to ping Apple servers for more complex queries in order to register for a waitlist inside the settings app in order to access the service.

It will be made available to the general public later this year, but the 18.1 version number indicates that Apple Intelligence won't be released with the upcoming iPhone hardware, which is anticipated to be unveiled in the fall with iOS 18.

Apple Intelligence is a significant project for the company. Given that the system will only function on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max and newer, investors are hoping that the close integration of AI with Apple's operating system might spark a significant wave of updates in the upcoming years.

″We expect this iPhone cycle to remain strong for longer as AI feature sets (software and possibly hardware) improve in the 2025 iPhone,” Bank of America analyst Wamsi Mohan wrote in a note Monday.

What’s in and what’s not

The preview does not include everything in Apple Intelligence the company demoed at its annual developers conference in June.

The preview released on Monday includes:

  • A new Siri look that makes the edge of the phone glow
  • Other Siri improvements, such as the ability to understand commands when the speaker stumbles over their words
  • Siri can now answer troubleshooting questions about Apple products
  • Better photos search and movie creation
  • AI-generated summaries for Mail, Messages, voicemail transcriptions
  • Writing Tools, Apple’s text-generation service

These features are not in the AI preview yet, although Apple says they will be rolled out over the next year:

  • Image generation
  • Emoji generation
  • Automated photos clean up
  • Other Siri improvements, including its ability to use your personal information, and the ability to take actions inside apps
  • OpenAI ChatGPT integration
