The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has indicated that Ukrainian forces may freely utilise the weapons that the UK has supplied them as they continue their advances into Russia. In recent weeks, the war-torn Ukraine has unexpectedly started a counteroffensive against Russia, led by Vladimir Putin. Its military has started an incursion into Kursk oblast, a part of Russia on the other side of the eastern border of Ukraine, ostensibly to deflect Moscow's forces from territory they have conquered.

There are worries that tensions between Russia and the West may escalate further in light of the recent development in the conflict.However, the MoD declared that there had been no shift in policy since Labour took office, and that Ukraine had a "clear right" to use the weaponry that the UK had supplied for its own security.According to a MoD spokeswoman, "there has been no change in UK Government policy; operations inside Russia are not precluded by Ukraine's clear right of self-defence against Russia's illegal attacks under Article 51 of the UN Charter."
According to the policy, Russia may soon see anti-tank missiles, artillery, armoured vehicles, and other weapons that the UK donated to Ukraine's war effort in use. However, using Storm Shadow missiles outside of Ukraine will continue to be prohibited. Ukrainian troops appear to be gaining more territory within the Kursk region in recent days, while other neighbouring Russian states along Ukraine’s border have declared a state of emergency in response.

The offensive is believed to be the largest of its kind by a foreign army on Russian soil since the Second World War.
