Starmer: Things Will Worsen Before Improving
  • Starmer: Worse Before Better

"Things will get worse before they get better," according to Keir Starmer. Given his background as the head prosecutor for the CPS, he stated that although he didn't want to release any inmates early (to prevent overcrowding), it was imperative.

In his remarks, the prime minister stated, "It goes against the grain of everything I've ever done."

"But to put it bluntly, we wouldn't have been able to respond to the riots as we did if we hadn't made that difficult decision right away. And if we don't take tough action all around, we won't be able to fix the foundations of the country as we need to."

"I was not interested in testing the winter fuel payment means." but we had to make that decision," Starmer went on.

The chancellor, Rachel Reeves, revealed plans last month to introduce a means test for the winter fuel payment, where only those on pensions benefits would qualify, as part of a push to plug what she said was a £22bn black hole in the public finances left by the previous Conservative administration.
