Stampede at Umayyad Mosque: 4 Dead, 16 Injured

January 10, 2025

The Syrian national news agency (SANA) said that a stampede in Damascus' historic Umayyad Mosque on Friday left four people dead and sixteen injured.

According to a statement from the civil defense, five youngsters fainted, had significant bruising, and had fractures.

Maher Marwan, the governor of Damascus, told SANA that authorities were working to identify the incident's causes and will hold those responsible accountable.

"We are working to take urgent measures to ensure that such incidents are not repeated in public places in the future," SANA quoted him as saying.

Syria's new rulers seized control of Damascus on Dec. 8, forcing President Bashar al-Assad to flee after more than 13 years of civil war and ending his family's decades-long rule.
