Barclays Offering £2,000 to Customers for a Single Home Upgrade

Barclays is offering a one-time £2,000 cash reward to customers who make an eco-friendly upgrade to their home.

The incentive is available to those with a residential mortgage from the UK bank who choose to install a heat pump in their property.

Customers do not need to take out a loan or borrow from Barclays to qualify for the Greener Home Reward—the bank will provide the funds to help cover the cost of the upgrade.

Various home improvements are eligible for the scheme, but the highest reward amount of £2,000 applies to heat pump installations.

While heat pumps are typically more expensive to purchase and install than traditional boilers, they are far more energy efficient and can lead to significant savings on energy bills—potentially reducing costs by hundreds of pounds annually.

Heat pumps work by extracting heat from the air, ground, or water and transferring it through a heat exchanger. This energy is then used to warm the water in radiators, underfloor heating, and hot water cylinders.

Barclays specifies that customers can claim only one Greener Home Reward, even for joint mortgages, and it must be for the home they live in permanently. The reward cannot be used for additional properties or multiple home improvements.

The £2,000 reward applies to ‘low-carbon heating’ improvements, which include air source heat pumps, biomass pellet boilers, and ground source heat pumps.

In a statement, Barclays said: "Climate change is an urgent and complex challenge for all of us, and we're committed to making a difference by working towards becoming a net zero bank. We also want to support our customers by offering rewards for eligible home improvements through our Greener Home Reward scheme."

To be eligible for the £2,000 reward you must meet all of the following requirements:

  • Have an eligible residential mortgage with Barclays

  • Have a Direct Debit for your mortgage payments

  • Not be in breach of your mortgage conditions or have permission to let

  • All your payments need to be up to date

  • Make sure you haven't claimed the reward before

  • Proof of payments or work to be dated within three months of your claim

Barclays adds: "The cost to you for the work, excluding any third-party contributions - such as a government grant - as shown on the invoice needs to be equal to or more than the value of the Greener Home Reward for the completed home improvement.

"Before getting your home improvements done, if you have a residential mortgage with us, we're offering a Home Health Check, in partnership with British Gas. For £50, we can:

  • Give you an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating, which looks at how much energy your home is using

  • Suggest ways you can potentially save on energy and costs

  • Talk to you about your home and energy habits, and answer any questions you might have."
