Members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP)'s Devbhoomi Sangharsh Samiti and a civil society group have urged the civic body to demolish a mosque in Shimla's Sanjauli locality, warning of a 'mass movement' if their demand is not met within 15 days.
In December, the municipal commissioner granted the Sanjauli mosque committee three months to remove the 'unauthorized' floors of the five-storey structure. The committee and the Himachal Pradesh Waqf Board were also instructed to submit a status report by March 15, after which a hearing regarding the remaining two floors would take place.
On Wednesday, a delegation from Civil Society, Sanjauli, and Devbhoomi Sangharsh Samiti met the Shimla Municipal Commissioner, submitting a memorandum reiterating their demand.
They alleged that despite the demolition order, no action has been taken so far and warned of a mass agitation against the authorities if the mosque is not taken down within the given timeframe.
