At least 153 people have lost their lives after a devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar today, causing widespread destruction and sending tremors as far as Bangkok.

Myanmar’s military junta reported that at least 144 people were killed and 737 injured in the country following the powerful quake on Friday. The disaster prompted both Myanmar and Thailand to declare a state of emergency.

Military leader Min Aung Hlaing cautioned that the death toll could rise further, as rescue workers described using their bare hands to pull survivors from the rubble.

In Bangkok, which has been designated a disaster zone by local authorities, a high-rise building under construction collapsed near Chatuchak Market, sending a massive cloud of dust into the air. Footage shared on social media captured scenes of chaos as people fled while the structure crumbled.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake struck at a depth of 6.2 miles near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city. A significant aftershock measuring 6.4 in magnitude followed the initial quake.
