No more hand luggage drama as UK airport makes major change to security rules

Going through airport security often feels like a challenge—can you squeeze all your travel-sized toiletries into a flimsy plastic bag? And will a stray bottle of suncream force you to unpack your entire suitcase in front of everyone in line?

Good news for travelers flying from Gatwick Airport: thanks to new technology, there’s no longer a need to separate your liquids into a clear plastic bag.

While the 100ml limit still applies to items like shampoo, suncream, and makeup remover, you can now leave them inside your hand luggage as they go through security scanners.

This update is made possible by the installation of advanced computed tomography (CT) 3D scanning machines, which airport security staff describe as cutting-edge technology.

As part of a government initiative, all 19 of Gatwick’s security lanes have been installed with the new equipment.

Not only should this cut queue time, but removing plastic bags is also a sustainable move too.

The new tech comes as part of a multi-million-pound project the airport hopes will transform its security screening process and mean smoother operations in the run-up to the busy summer season.

Cyrus Dana, head of security at London Gatwick, said, ‘More than 95% of passengers already pass through security at London Gatwick in under five minutes.
