Major Labour defection to Tories after ‘Sadiq Khan vanity projects' come under fire

Cllr Paul Fisher has defected to the Conservatives

Westminster Councillor Paul Fisher has resigned from the Labour Party and joined the Conservatives, citing three key reasons: "Stagnation, Sadiq, and Security." He criticized London Mayor Sadiq Khan, accusing him of neglecting crime and public safety in favor of "vanity projects" such as the £150 million Oxford Street pedestrianisation scheme.

Khan’s plan, launched earlier this year, aims to revamp Oxford Street to attract more visitors, create jobs, and boost London’s economy. However, critics, including Westminster's Conservative group, argue that the project is poorly thought out and could lead to an increase in crime.

Fisher also condemned Labour’s economic approach, claiming that the party is pushing the UK into stagnation by relying on high taxes, increased public spending, and borrowing. He expressed disappointment that the Labour Party, which he had long supported, was failing to address key issues. In contrast, he stated that Westminster’s Conservative leadership had shown a willingness to find practical solutions to the city’s problems.

Fisher has represented the West End ward since 2022, an area that includes Oxford Street, Regent Street, Bond Street, Fitzrovia, and Marylebone. Labour won control of the ward for the first time in the 2022 local elections. However, in a by-election in September 2024, the Conservatives regained one of the three seats, returning former Councillor Timothy Barnes to office. Labour currently holds 28 seats on Westminster Council, while the Conservatives have 26.

Conservative Group Leader Paul Swaddle welcomed Fisher’s decision, describing him as a respected and capable councillor. He also noted that recent by-election wins reflect growing dissatisfaction with Labour’s leadership, both in Westminster and across the UK. Swaddle expressed confidence in the Conservatives' chances of reclaiming control of the council in the next local elections.

The Mayor of London’s office has been contacted for a response.
