Bangladeshi University Students Join Global Strike to Support Gaza

In response to a global call for a strike on April 7, 2025, university students across Bangladesh have announced their participation in a movement expressing solidarity with the people of Gaza.

Students from various institutions—including Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), BRAC University (BRACU), Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET),  International University of Business Agriculture and Technology(IUBAT), Daffodil International University (DIU), Dhaka University (DU), Green University of Bangladesh (GUB), Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET), and the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST), Northern University Bangladesh,  —have issued public statements in support of the strike.

The movement urges a complete pause of academic and professional engagements as a form of protest against the ongoing violence in Gaza.

This international call to action comes amid intensifying Israeli military operations in the region.

According to Al Jazeera, at least 46 Palestinians have been killed in the past 24 hours due to Israeli airstrikes. Since October 2023, the total reported death toll has reached 50,695, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

Dhaka University

At least 12 departments of Dhaka University, along with the Faculties of Law and Fine Arts, have declared that they will refrain from attending classes and exams on April 7, standing in solidarity with the global movement against Israeli aggression in Gaza.

By 7:30 PM, those joining the boycott included the Faculty of Fine Arts, Faculty of Law, the Institute of Education and Research (IER), as well as the departments of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE), Nuclear Engineering, Psychology, Islamic Studies, Theatre and Performance Studies, Communication Disorders, Arabic, Sociology, Political Science, Finance, and Pali and Buddhist Studies.

Habiba Akhter, a student of the Mathematics Department at the University of Dhaka, confirmed to Dazzling Dawn that almost all departments, including the Mathematics Department, have announced closure for tomorrow. Meanwhile, various programs, including a human chain, have been organized by the students of the University of Dhaka for tomorrow afternoon. It has been reported that students from all campuses will take part in the event.

In addition, expressing solidarity with the students, various political parties including Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Andolan Bangladesh have called for protest rallies and movements across the country on April 7.
