Switzerland has officially outlawed Hamas and its affiliated groups, with the new legislation set to come into force on May 15, the government announced on Wednesday.
This decision aligns Switzerland with countries like Germany, which imposed a similar ban shortly after the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack on Israel that left approximately 1,200 people dead and around 250 taken hostage to Gaza.
Under the Swiss ban, all forms of support and activities linked to Hamas are prohibited. Authorities will also have the power to issue entry bans and carry out expulsions. The government stated that the move is intended in part to prevent Hamas from using Switzerland as a financial base.
