A man has died and a child has been injured following a shooting incident at the Fairgreen Shopping Centre in Carlow town, County Carlow. The event occurred around 6:15 p.m. and prompted a swift response from emergency services.
According to initial reports, the man's injuries are believed to have been self-inflicted. The child, a young girl, received treatment from paramedics at the scene but did not require hospitalisation. Authorities have stated that the exact cause of the girl's injuries remains unclear at this stage.
As a precaution, the Army's Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit has been requested to attend the scene. The man's body remains at the location and will not be removed until it has been declared safe by the EOD team.
The shopping centre was evacuated shortly after the incident, and a large security cordon has been established around the area. Police, fire services, and ambulances responded to the scene promptly, and a helicopter was seen hovering overhead as part of the emergency operation.
A police spokesperson reassured the public, saying: “At this time, there is no further concern for public safety.”
