In a historic moment for British politics, Princess Opeyemi Bright, a 29-year-old Nigerian-British woman, has been inaugurated as the youngest mayor in the UK. She now holds the esteemed position of First Citizen of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. The official ceremony took place on Friday, May 16th, marking a new chapter for the borough and celebrating the contributions of the Nigerian community to British society, Daily Dazzling Dawn understands.
Born to Nigerian parents in Homerton Hospital, Councillor Bright has been a resident of Barking and Dagenham since 2009. Her journey into public service began early; she was first elected as a Councillor in 2018 at the age of just 22. Since then, she has served as a school governor, a board member of a non-governmental organization (NGO), and a mentor for students aspiring to leadership roles.
In her inaugural address, Councillor Bright articulated a vision of civic leadership rooted in inclusivity, community pride, and dedicated service. "I believe in the power of community, the importance of tradition, and the need to inspire pride in the place we all call home," she stated. "As Civic Mayor, I am committed to being a voice that uplifts our borough — honouring local heroes, supporting charities, and forging deeper connections with residents, schools, and businesses."
Drawing upon her extensive experience in community engagement and public service, Councillor Bright will use her mayoral year to champion two causes close to her heart. The first is Ab Phab Youth Club, a local initiative that provides inclusive activities and support for young people, both disabled and non-disabled. The second is Crohn’s & Colitis UK, a national charity offering vital support and advocacy for individuals living with inflammatory bowel diseases. Councillor Bright was diagnosed with Crohn's disease in 2011, adding a personal dimension to her commitment. "Through this partnership, I aim to raise awareness, advocate for better support, and bring hope to those affected," she said.
A spokesperson for the Barking and Dagenham Council stated that Councillor Bright is deeply committed to fostering unity and a sense of belonging throughout the borough, with a focus on inclusivity, dignity, and connection for all residents, regardless of their background.
