Air India Jet Crashes Near Ahmedabad
  • The flight from Ahmedabad to Gatwick crashed shortly after take-off.

A tragic disaster struck moments after takeoff today as Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner bound for London Gatwick, crashed into a residential area in Ahmedabad. The aircraft, carrying 242 individuals including 53 British nationals, went down in the Meghani Nagar neighborhood, prompting a massive emergency response and engulfing the crash site in thick black smoke.

The ill-fated flight, an Air India Boeing 787-8, departed from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport and lost contact with air traffic control less than a minute after take-off, according to flight tracking data. The pilot reportedly issued a "MAYDAY" call, indicating a critical in-flight emergency, before the plane plummeted into the urban area. While the exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed, rescue teams are on scene, scrambling to locate survivors and provide urgent medical attention amidst the widespread destruction.

This incident marks the first-ever crash of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, a model that has completed five million journeys since its introduction 14 years ago. India's Civil Aviation Minister, Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, expressed his devastation and confirmed he is personally overseeing the "highest alert" response, coordinating all aviation and emergency agencies.

The precise cause of the crash is under immediate investigation by India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB). Initial reports suggest a catastrophic malfunction shortly after the aircraft became airborne. The fact that a distress call was made points to the flight crew being aware of a severe problem before the impact. Investigators will be analyzing the flight recorders (black boxes) to uncover the sequence of events that led to this unprecedented Dreamliner disaster.

Air India confirmed the "incident" involving Flight AI171 on social media, stating they are "ascertaining the details." Ahmedabad Airport has suspended all flights indefinitely, and London Gatwick, the flight's intended destination, confirmed the crash of the plane due to land at 6:25 PM local time.

Among the 242 people on board were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, one Canadian national, and seven Portuguese nationals, alongside 12 crew members. There is no information at this time to suggest any Bangladeshi passengers were on the flight. Rescue operations are ongoing, with multiple fire engines and ambulances at the scene as authorities work to manage the crisis and determine the full extent of the tragedy.
