A new era has begun in Bangladesh football with the inclusion of two expatriate players of Sylheti origin — Hamza Choudhury and Shamit Shome. Their arrival not only holds the promise of raising the standard of the national team but also serves as an inspiration for the next generation of footballers.

Hamza Choudhury: From Premier League to the Bangladesh National Team

Born in Loughborough, England, Hamza Choudhury’s parents hail from Snanaghat village in Bahubal Upazila of Habiganj district, Sylhet. A well-known name in the English Premier League, Hamza has played for Leicester City and also represented England U-21. In 2024, with FIFA's approval, he chose to represent Bangladesh.

He visited his ancestral home in March 2025, receiving a warm welcome from fans at Sylhet Airport and in his home village in Habiganj.

On March 25, Hamza made his debut in the third round of the Asian Cup qualifiers against India, held in Shillong. His outstanding performance impressed not only Bangladeshi fans but also Indian spectators, even though the match ended in a goalless draw.

Shamit Shome: From Srimangal to Canada, and Now in Red and Green

Shamit Shome, a former player for the Canadian national team, has now committed to playing for Bangladesh. His ancestral home is in Srimangal, the tea capital of Sylhet. He is set to make his debut for Bangladesh on June 10 in a match against Singapore.

Currently, Shamit plays for Cavalry FC in the Canadian Premier League. He previously played two international matches for Canada back in 2020.

His decision to join Bangladesh's national team has sparked celebration both online and in his native village of Srimangal.

Emad Ahmed Rahi, a well-known footballer from Moulvibazar — Shamit’s home district — said, "As an experienced midfielder, Shamit’s inclusion is a big gain for Bangladesh. Sylhet has always been passionate about sports and culture. I believe one day Sylheti players will lead the national team."

Fans and supporters across the country are optimistic about these two names. With Hamza and Shamit in the squad, Bangladesh football seems to be dreaming again.
