A striking 10% of eligible people are missing out on a key Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) benefit. Data analysed by BMAS reveals that one in ten individuals are failing to claim Disability Living Allowance (DLA).
Amelia Hornsby from BMAS stressed the importance of awareness, saying: “It’s crucial people know what they’re entitled to. Checking eligibility for DLA or PIP can help individuals and families access vital support that can significantly improve daily life.”
She explained that many are unaware of the additional schemes linked to these benefits, such as the Blue Badge, the Motability Scheme which provides adapted cars, and free bus passes—resources that support independence and quality of life.
Hornsby added: “The scale of unclaimed support shows just how many households are struggling without the help they deserve. Simplifying the process could transform lives, giving disabled people and their families not only financial aid but also access to independence schemes. No one should lose out simply because the system feels too complicated.”
Currently, Disability Living Allowance (DLA) is being replaced by other benefits. For claimants in England and Wales, letters will outline when their DLA will end and how to apply for Personal Independence Payment (PIP). In Scotland, adults aged 18 or over will be moved to the Scottish Adult Disability Payment.
Those born on or before 8 April 1948 can continue receiving DLA as long as they remain eligible. However, anyone born after that date will eventually see their DLA end, with the DWP providing written notice beforehand. Claimants will keep receiving DLA until that date and don’t need to take any action unless their circumstances change.
