Wazed originally secured the prestigious five-year mandate to lead the South-East Asia Regional Office in early 2024, representing member states that include Bangladesh and India. However, the political transition in Dhaka fundamentally disrupted her tenure. In March 2025, Bangladesh's Anti-Corruption Commission, operating under an interim government that replaced Hasina, filed formal charges against her alleging fraud and forgery. By July 2025, the international health body sent her on administrative leave, subsequently formalising an unpaid leave status late last year.
Internal agency scrutiny subsequently expanded beyond domestic prosecutorial claims. The WHO accused Wazed of committing financial fraud in relation to an official mission to China and of misrepresenting her academic credentials, according to a formal letter sent by her lawyers to the health organisation on 3 July 2026. Regarding the real estate property, Wazed maintained she obtained the land before joining the WHO under Bangladeshi statutory provisions granting property to descendants of independence leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Hasina's father.
