A nine-year-old girl has died following a two-vehicle collision on the A813 in the Scottish Highlands, with two other people taken to hospital for treatment.
The crash happened at around 5.30pm on Wednesday, 7 October 2026, on the A813 between Drumnadrochit and Cannich. The girl was travelling as a rear-seat passenger in a Volkswagen Polo and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Volkswagen Polo and its front-seat passenger were taken to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness. Police have not confirmed the extent of their injuries.
A Ford Ranger was also involved in the collision.
Emergency services, including an air ambulance, were dispatched to the scene after the crash was reported.
The A813 was subsequently closed for around seven hours while officers carried out investigations and examined the circumstances of the collision.
Police Scotland officers remain focused on establishing what happened before and during the crash.
The death of the child has prompted an investigation, with officers appealing to members of the public who may have witnessed the collision or seen either of the vehicles shortly before it occurred.
Police Scotland Sergeant Kate Finlayson expressed condolences to the girl's family and friends while confirming that enquiries were continuing.
She appealed directly to anyone who witnessed the collision or saw the vehicles before the crash to contact police.
Officers are also asking motorists who were travelling through the area at the relevant time and may have captured footage on a dashcam to come forward.
Police are seeking information that could help establish the full circumstances surrounding the collision.
Anyone who may have information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting reference 2610 of 7 October.
The circumstances that led to the collision have not been established publicly, and police have not indicated that anyone has been charged in connection with the incident.
The investigation remains ongoing.
The A813 connects communities in the Highlands, and the collision caused a lengthy road closure as emergency services and investigators worked at the scene.
Police Scotland has urged potential witnesses to provide information rather than speculate about the circumstances of the crash.
For the family and friends of the nine-year-old girl, the investigation follows the loss of a child in circumstances that remain under examination.
