Hungary welcomed 6.2 million tourists in the summer of 2023

More than 6.2 million tourists were registered in Hungary from the beginning of June to the end of August, a 6% increase compared to summer 2019, director of the Hungarian Tourism Authority, Zoltán Guller, revealed.

Amid this period, more than 17 million guest nights stays were registered, an increase of 3%. In terms of revenue, Guller noted that it also increased by 27%, reaching HUF 312 billion (€805 million).

According to a report by AboutHungary, a website run by the Hungarian Prime Minister’s international communications office, the market is essentially evenly split between foreign and domestic tourists, with a notable increase Pay attention to the number of tourists from the Czech Republic, Poland and Romania.


Data shows that between June and August this year, about 2.6 million foreign tourists enjoyed 7.2 million overnight stays in Hungary, while about 3.6 million domestic tourists had spent 9.9 million nights in tourist accommodation. The capital welcomed 1.5 million visitors, generating 110 billion forints in revenue. In August, utilization remained at around 78%.

According to the head of the Hungarian Hotel and Restaurant Association, Tamás Flesch, the hotel industry had a successful profitable season.

Guller also mentioned that bookings have been recorded with the National Travel Data Service (NTAK), which predicts that overnight stays will reach 3.4 million in September, 3 million in October and 2.4 million in November.

Previously, Hungarian authorities revealed that the total number of guest nights stays in the country increased by 4%, reaching a total of 12.2 million from January to May 2023. Commenting on this data, the CEO of the Hungarian Tourism Agency, Péter Horváth, noted that the number of visitors from Italy almost doubled from the beginning of the year to the end of May, while visitors from Israel and Poland increased by nearly 50%. At the same time, the number of German tourists also increased by one-third during this period.

He added that he expected a promising 10 to 15 percent increase in revenue from foreign visitors, both in the capital and nationwide, this year as a whole. As he explains, this increase is expected to bring the figure to around 90 to 95% of pre-pandemic levels, indicating a significant recovery of the Hungarian tourism industry.
