Portugal emerged as an attractive destination in August this year, with accommodation establishments across the country welcoming about 3.5 million guests.

According to INE, the National Statistics Office of the Portuguese Government, guests spent approximately 10.1 million nights in Portugal in the same month, representing the highest monthly earnings ever recorded.

These customers generated a total revenue of 878.3 million euros, up 10.4% compared to August 2022, of which 709.8 million euros came from ‘stays’.

On the other hand, compared to August 2019, the increase was more significant – 37.6%.
Additionally, the data shows the difference in revenue per available room (RevPAR) and average daily rate (ADR) from 2023 to 2019. In 2023, the RevPAR stood at €108.8, marking a 6.8 per cent increase, while the ADR reached €147.8, reflecting an 8.7 per cent increase compared to 2019.

Comparing the numbers to August 2019, certain municipalities contributed the most to total overnight stays.

Lisbon, which accounted for 14.9 per cent of the total, saw a 4.3 per cent increase in overnight stays. Albufeira, comprising 11.9 per cent of the total, fell short of 2019 levels, experiencing a decrease of 12.3 per cent.
In contrast, Porto, making up 6.5 per cent of the total, experienced a significant increase with a 29.1 per cent increase in overnight stays.

In addition to the above information, INE also revealed that, between January and August 2023, there were 22.2 million visitors and 59.1 million overnight stays, showing significant growth respectively 14.4% and 11.6% of overnight stays over the same period. Last year.

In contrast, compared to the same period in 2019, the number of overnight stays increased by 8.4% in the first eight months of this year, with both locals and non-residents contributing to this growth.
Additionally, in August 2023, passenger numbers at domestic airports increased significantly year-on-year by 13.2% compared to August 2022, marking an all-time high.

Furthermore, from January to August 2023, the number of passengers increased by 23.1% compared to the same period in 2022.

These impressive numbers in overnight stays and passenger numbers come as no surprise.
