Germany makes easier for Skilled foreign workers to move to the country

October 31, 2023
German authorities said they are continuing with plans to relax some immigration measures so that foreign skilled workers can more easily come to the country to work. Recently, the German government announced that it will relax some regulations, emphasizing that the ceiling for obtaining a green card will be lowered. Furthermore, the government noted that as part of its plans to facilitate the immigration of skilled workers into the country, the authorities are also introducing opportunity cards with a points system and relaxed rules for those with professional experience and for those with graduate degrees. Currently in Germany there is a shortage of qualified workers in many regions and fields. Data shows that by the end of 2022, Germany needs about 1.98 million workers. With the high number of workers needed, the German government wants to increase the participation of women and older people in the labor market and attract more qualified workers from other countries. In March this year, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that it was very important for Germany to attract more skilled workers, and emphasized that to achieve this, the country must have a more modern skilled immigration law. German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser also emphasized that the country needs more skilled foreign workers to solve the current labor shortage. However, considering the current regulations, Minister Faeser emphasized that some changes need to be made so that qualified workers can enter Germany without having to go through cumbersome procedures. As the government explains, in the future all foreigners with a diploma will be able to take up any qualifying job. In addition, all foreigners with at least two years of experience in a specific field will be able to immigrate as workers to Germany. Foreigners' professional qualifications will also no longer have to be recognized in Germany, meaning the procedure will be shorter.
