Thai groom kills 4 people including bride, at wedding

A Thai para-athlete and former soldier shot and killed his bride and three others before committing suicide on his wedding day, police have told the BBC. Grooms Chaturon Suksuk, 29, and Kanchana Pachunthuk, 44, got married in northeastern Thailand on Saturday. He reportedly suddenly left the wedding reception, returned with a gun, and shot and killed his wife, her 62-year-old mother, and her 38-year-old sister. Two guests were directly hit by bullets and taken to the hospital. One of them died. Police told the BBC Chaturong "was quite intoxicated at the time", but his motive remains unclear. He had bought the gun and ammunition legally last year, they added. Thai media reported that the couple got into an argument during the party, citing partygoers' statements to police. It was also reported that Chatron was feeling insecure due to the age difference with Kanchana. However, police said this was still speculation, adding that they were gathering evidence and expected the case to be closed "soon." According to Thai media, Chatron and Kanchana lived together for three years before getting married. Chatron won a silver medal in swimming at the ASEAN Para Games held in Indonesia last year. He is also believed to be on the list of athletes to take part in the World Ability Sports Games in Thailand next month. He lost his right leg while serving in a light infantry unit guarding the Thai border. Although mass shootings are rare, gun ownership is widespread in Thailand. Three people were killed in a shooting at a luxury shopping mall in Bangkok last month. And in October 2022, a former police officer attacked a kindergarten in northeastern Thailand with a gun and a knife, killing 37 children.
