As part of the push for cleaner air, two brand-new pedal-assist electric freight vehicles will be utilized to perform necessary duties along a portion of the coast.

They will be sent out to replenish restrooms and catering outlets along Poole and Bournemouth's beaches.

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council used recently acquired government funding to purchase the vehicles.

They replace the diesel vans previously used to carry out the same tasks.

With pedal power and batteries that can be charged overnight, it is hoped the bikes will make a valuable contribution to improving air quality in the area.

Richard Pincroft, head of transport and sustainable travel at BCP Council, said: “It’s all part of our ongoing commitment to improve air quality, reduce congestion, and encourage eco-friendly, sustainable transport for both work and leisure purposes.”

Part of a £120,000 grant from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs’ (DEFRA) Air Quality Fund has been used to purchase the e-cargo bikes.
