Apsana-Ehtasham: An ex-husband and wife fight to become MP

  • Apsana-Ehtasham's marriage and post-marriage issues got up in the court statement.

Apsana's ex-husband, Ehtashamul Haque, who lost the ward councillor election, has become an independent candidate against his ex-wife, the Labour Party's current MP Apsana Begum, in Britain's July 4 election.

Apsana-Ehtasham's marriage and post-marriage issues got up in the court statement.

Ehtashamul's candidature from the Bangladeshi-populated London seat of Poplar and Limehouse against his ex-wife and current MP, nine years after the divorce, has generated mixed reactions in the community.

When Apsana Begum was contacted on her office, personal phone, and email for a comment, she replied that it was not possible to speak at the moment due to the busy schedule of elections. However, she will contact this reporter after the election.

However, many members of the community, including supporters of Apsana, went to comment on Ehtesham's candidacy. Even though there is no possibility of winning, he has become a candidate only because of Apsana's barrier.

Dr. Renu Lutfa, who has been in the journalism and teaching profession in Britain for more than four decades, said that Ehtasham has become a candidate against Apsana with his sense of taste. However, I am not interested in talking about his candidature regarding my taste.

It is known that in 2013, Apsana, the daughter of former councillors of Tower Hamlets Council Monir Uddin Ahmed and Ehtashamul Haque, got married. The village home of both is in Jagannathpur Upazila of Sunamganj. The couple got divorced in 2015. In 2020, Apsana, in a post on ex-Twitter now X, alleged that she was a victim of domestic abuse. She went on to become chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Domestic Violence and Abuse.

She told the court that she was a victim of domestic violence, coercive control, and financial abuse.

Apsana was charged with fraud in 2020 in three incidents between 2013 and 2016. However, on July 30, 2021, Apsana was found not guilty of any charges.

Commenting on his candidature, Ehteshamul Haque said, "Brother, I got married again about six years ago and started a family. I have no personal conflict with Apsana."

After my divorce, I also teamed up with Apsana for three years. Even in 2019, Apsana sent me text messages. I respect her as an ex-wife. But, as an ex-councillor and political worker, there is no law that says I cannot speak about the politics of my constituency if the seat's current MP or MP candidate is my ex-wife. As Apsana is a candidate for a party, she can't do much even if she wants to; she herself knows that well.
