In the event that Rishi Sunak steps down following the general election, Kemi Badenoch is the front-runner to become the next leader of the Conservative Party.

However, in the most recent odds published by Betfair Exchange, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage is also a surprising candidate.

Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch is the favourite, with odds of 9/2, followed by House of Commons leader Penny Mordaunt (9/2).

They are closely followed by Security Minister Tom Tugendhat and former Home Secretary Priti Patel, who are joint third favourites with odds of 7/1.

But the shock name on the list is that of Mr Farage, with odds of 13/1. He is marginally ahead of Suella Braverman and James Cleverly (14/1).

Millions of Britons have headed to the polls across the country for the 2024 General Election.

Mr Sunak is hoping to stay in power while Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer hopes he can end 14 years of Tory rule to bring his party back into office.

Mr Farage's Reform UK has emerged as a competitor to the Tories for the votes of those on the right in the UK.

The Prime Minister has previously said if his party were to lose the election, he will stay on as the MP for Richmond in North Yorkshire.

Asked recently on ITV's Loose Women whether he loved the job enough to carry on in those circumstances, he said: "Yes of course I'm staying, I love being an MP, I love my constituents, I love my home in North Yorkshire, it's wonderful - and I love being able to get back there."
