What's Happening in the American Election

The American election is an ongoing process where officials are elected through primaries across the states for both Republican and Democratic parties. This process includes the nomination of Presidents from the parties. After a year-long campaign, Donald Trump was nominated by the Republican National Convention on July 15, just two days after a near-miss assassination attempt on him.

Trump survived by a narrow margin as the bullet grazed his ear. He responded to the incident with a show of resilience, raising his fist and calling for a fight.

The assassination attempt significantly altered the political climate. The fierce competition between the Blue and Red parties and the rhetoric of their leaders were dramatically affected by this event. The incident underscored how political discourse can impact the general populace, as evidenced by a 20-year-old man committing the assassination attempt amid the confusion of the political climate.

Following the attempt on Trump's life, his wife, Melania Trump, urged Americans to unite on social media. Trump and President Biden also called for national unity. The attempt highlighted the vulnerability of political leaders' lives and prompted Republican leaders to condemn the violence, with one remarking about "bloodshed."

Fortunately, both leading political figures emphasized the need for unity and de-escalation of tensions. The heated political environment requires calming efforts from both parties nationwide.

Meanwhile, there have been calls for President Biden to step down from running in the presidential election in November. The Democratic Primary in August is expected to finalize the Democratic Presidential nomination, but Biden's performance in a CNN debate has led to prominent Democrats, including Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi, urging him not to run. The assassination attempt on Trump has somewhat quieted opposition to Biden's next presidential bid.

After over 250 years of American independence, democracy seems under threat from both non-democratic forces and the rhetoric of Democratic and Republican politicians. There is hope that this incident will lead to a renewed consciousness about preserving American democracy.
