  • Total internet blackout in Bangladesh

Bangladeshi expatriates living in the UK and different countries around the world are worried about their relatives in the country as the government has stopped internet services. Many expatriates are unable to communicate with their elderly parents in expatriate countries.

Many cannot get in touch with their wives and children over WhatsApp. On Thursday evening, Bangladesh authorities shut down all types of internet connections around the country.

On Thursday, Bangladeshi expatriates held rallies and protests in support of Bangladeshi students at various places, including London's Altab Ali Park and in France.

Protesters set fire to the headquarters of the state broadcaster in Bangladesh on Thursday as violent clashes between students and police continued, the authorities said.

The nationwide protests have been fuelled by high unemployment among the youth. Nearly a fifth of Bangladesh's 170 million population is out of work or education.
Police and the government clashed with student activists in Bangladesh, causing 19 deaths in the ongoing protests over government job allocation. The violence spread to other cities, with at least 19 killed and hundreds injured.
