UK Updated Bangladesh travel warning

July 19, 2024

UK Government updated again this morning Bangladesh travel advice on Friday morning.
The British government has issued a new warning for British citizens to travel to Bangladesh in light of the tense situation in Bangladesh over the anti-quota movement of students.

Brits heading to Bangladesh are being warned that 'there have been deaths' in the country amid violent protests. Students across Bangladesh have been taking part in protests, with a large number of people reported to have died during clashes. In a new update published on Friday morning (July 19), the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) issued guidance on the student protests. The FCDO said: "There are student protests across the country. There is widespread violence across Dhaka city. There are numerous rallies planned for July 19, 2024. You are advised to shelter in a safe place and follow the advice of local authorities.
The protests are likely to continue. You should avoid all gatherings, including protests and demonstrations. Be alert to quickly changing situations on the streets and keep up-to-date with local news.

"Follow the advice of local authorities." Students have been demonstrating for weeks against a quota system for government jobs, which they say favours allies of the ruling party.

Protestors want it replaced with a merit-based system. The government stopped the quotas after mass student protests in 2018.

But last month, Bangladesh's High Court reinstated the quotas after relatives of the 1971 veterans filed petitions, triggering the latest demonstrations. Schools and universities are said to have been shut down until further notice after the violence escalated.
