Call for Student Rights & Democracy in Bangladesh.

July 19, 2024

The global community should feel a deep sense of shame towards the current autocratic government in Bangladesh for their brutal crackdown on students who are courageously fighting for legitimate rights. It is imperative to address the widespread unrest, human rights violations, and the severe abuses being carried out against innocent students who are peacefully advocating against the unjust quota system in Bangladesh’s recruitment process. Sadly, numerous students have already lost their lives in this struggle. The actions of this autocratic regime over the last decade are deeply troubling. The fact that the Awami League has retained power for several terms without fair elections and the lack of response from Western leaders raise serious concerns. The increasing authoritarianism in the country has prompted comparisons between Sheikh Hasina and historical dictators, yet she remains in power despite mounting calls for her resignation.

The recent accusations by the Awami League Secretary General, placing blame on Tarique Rahman who is currently in exile in the UK, have sparked further controversy. It is questionable why they are attempting to shift the blame to him for their own failures. While Rahman’s influence should not be underestimated, evident by the low voter turnout (only 5-8%) in the last general election following his call for peaceful protests, he is perceived as a grassroots choice - a gentle, compassionate, and peace-loving figure. However, his exile presents risks, including concerns for his safety such as the potential for abduction, unlawful detention, or covert attacks upon his return to Bangladesh.

As advocates for human rights in political affairs, it is essential for global leaders to take a firm stance against the oppressive regime in Bangladesh. There is a critical need to stop the violence and oppression against students and political figures, demand the restoration of democracy, ensure free and fair elections, support the safe return of Tarique Rahman, and seek justice for all individuals who have sacrificed their lives in the pursuit of democratic ideals. We appeal for morally upright politicians within the current government to step down and denounce these atrocities. British Bangladeshis are counting on you to speak out for student rights, human rights, and democracy in Bangladesh.

Our aspiration is for a brighter future for all in Bangladesh, regardless of their political beliefs, national identity, or religious convictions.
