World leaders greet Prof Yunus on becoming Chief Adviser

The United Kingdom has welcomed the appointment of the interim government in Bangladesh, led by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.

"The interim government has the UK’s support as it works to restore peace and order, for the sake of the Bangladeshi people," said British Foreign Secretary David Lammy in a statement.

The UK urged all actors to prevent further violence and loss of life.

"The people of Bangladesh deserve accountability and a peaceful pathway to an inclusive democratic future," Lammy said.

Meanwhile, the United States (US) is stand ready to work with the Bangladesh interim government and welcomed its chief adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus's call for an end to the recent violence.

"We welcome Dr. Yunus's call for an end to the recent violence, and we stand ready to work with the interim government and Dr. Yunus as it charts a democratic future for the people of Bangladesh," said US Department of State Spokesperson Matthew Miller while responding to a question at a regular briefing in Washington on Thursday (local time).

He said there has been communication with the interim government, and the US Embassy Charge De' Affaires attended the interim government's swearing-in event at Bangabhaban on Thursday night.

DHAKA, Aug 9, 2024 (BSS) - China has welcomed Bangladesh's interim government and said Beijing stands ready to work with Bangladesh to promote bilateral exchanges and cooperation in various areas as well as further advance the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership between the two countries. 

"China has noted that Bangladesh has formed an interim government and welcomes it," a spokesperson at the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Friday.

The spokesperson said China strictly follows the principle of non-interference in other countries' internal affairs.

"We respect Bangladesh's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity and the development path independently chosen by the Bangladeshi people," the spokesperson said.

China stands firmly by its policy of good neighborliness and friendship with all people of Bangladesh.

The spokesperson said that the friendship between China and Bangladesh runs long and deep while China values its relations with Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi today conveyed his best wishes to Professor Muhammad Yunus on the assumption of his new responsibilities as chief adviser of Bangladesh's interim government.

"India remains committed to working with Bangladesh to fulfill the shared aspirations of both our peoples for peace, security and development," he posted on his verified X handle (former twitter).

The New Delhi, he said, hopes for an early return to normalcy in Bangladesh, ensuring the safety and protection of Hindus and all other minority communities.

Meanwhile, the United Nations is stand ready to support the Bangladesh's interim government and people of Bangladesh in any way that they deem is necessary.

"Well, we'll see what kind of formal request we get from any new government that is formed. We, of course, stand ready to support the government and people of Bangladesh in any way that they deem is necessary," said Deputy Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General Farhan Haq at a briefing at UN headquarters in New York on Thursday.

He said that the UN encouraged a peaceful transition on the ground.

Haq said UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh Gwyn Lewis attended Thursday's swearing-in ceremony.

He said Lewis and the UN Bangladesh country team have been active in encouraging the process of making sure that the transition on the ground is peaceful.

Responding to a question, the Deputy Spokesman said they want to make sure that the violence that has been occurring in Bangladesh in recent weeks is tamped down.

"We have made that clear. Certainly, we stand against any racially based attacks or racially based incitement to violence," he added.
