London expatriate teacher, writer, researcher, lexicographer, BBC and Voice of America newsreader, Professor Dr. Golam Murshid died in a London hospital on Thursday.
He was directly my teacher, Shadhin Khasru, a prominent actor and an active organiser of the anti-apartheid movement in Britain, told to Daily Dazzling Dawn on Thursday afternoon. His wife is also suffering from cancer.
The scholar and writer breathed his last at Queen's Hospital in London. He was 84 years old at the time of his death.
Golam Murshid is a former professor of Bengali literature at Rajshahi University.He won a number of awards, including Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1982 for his contribution to research.
Besides being a prolific author, Dr. Murshid was a distinguished lexicographer. He edited a three-volume Bengali dictionary, called 'Bibartonmulak Bangla Abhidhan', published in 2013–2014. Two hundred years' of history of Bengali dictionaries, it is the first to be based on historical principles. It provides the evolution of the form and meaning of every word and traces the first use thereof in written Bengali.
