Needs workers in Australia

Australian youth are being encouraged to choose a career in the customs sector, where entry-level positions may start at over $100,000.

Insiders warn of an impending shortage of customs brokers due to the aging of the current staff, notwithstanding the lucrative compensation.

Customs brokers play a crucial role in facilitating trade by ensuring that import and export goods comply with all customs regulations and are essential to the smooth flow of goods in and out of the country.

Supply chains expert and director of Transitainer WA, Kelly Crossley, warned that the industry is on the verge of a crisis due to a shortage of new recruits.

'Customs brokers are the nation's gateway for the smooth flow of goods across borders, and they navigate complex customs regulations, ensure compliance and help businesses avoid costly delays and penalties,' she told WA Today.

'Without customs brokers, nothing comes in and nothing goes out of Australia,' she said.

According to Crossley, more than half of the 1,609 licensed customs brokers in Australia are over the age of 50.

She urged younger Aussies to consider taking on a role with the profession.

'What makes a good customs broker is analytical skills and attention to detail,' she said.

'They also need good time management skills and problem-solving ability.

According to job site SEEK, customs brokers in Australia generally earn between $95,000 and $115,000. However, some positions can offer salaries exceeding $170,000.

Aspiring brokers must complete a Diploma in Customs Broking, pass an exam administered by the Australian Border Force, and obtain a customs brokering licence to practice.
