There have been reports of several Muslim worshippers being kidnapped in the Bushe hamlet, Sabon Birni local government region, during the Fajr prayer.
In a statement issued on Friday morning, February 7, DSP Ahmed Rufai, the spokesperson for the Sokoto State Police Command, confirmed the kidnapping to the media.
At least ten worshippers, including the Imam, were reportedly kidnapped by the gunmen when they broke into a mosque in Bushe town at daybreak on Thursday, February 6.
The attack happened while worshippers were offering their early morning Subhi prayer, a community member told the media.
Despite the presence of security forces, including soldiers from the Nigerian Army's 8 Division headquarters who were part of Operation Fasan Yamma, the source said in an interview with The Punch that the village had been subjected to many attacks.
Sa'idu Ibrahim, a representative for the region in the Sokoto State House of Assembly, acknowledged the kidnapping of worshippers but praised the army for stopping other kidnappings.
Legit.ng previously reported that Etiyin Maurice Edet, a traditional ruler in Cross River state, was abducted by gunmen and taken to an unidentified location.
During his kidnapping, the armed men reportedly also killed the monarch's chief aide. Irene Ugbo, the state's police command spokesperson, acknowledged the regrettable development but refrained from providing any commentary.
