Majority of Eastern Workers Back Government’s Workers’ Rights Overhaul, Poll Finds

A new poll reveals that working people in the East strongly support the government’s proposed changes to workers' rights.

A survey of over 21,000 people, conducted by the Trades Union Congress (TUC) and Hope Not Hate, found that nearly three-quarters of workers back Labour’s Employment Rights Bill.

The proposed bill aims to strengthen job security by ending unfair dismissals, banning “exploitative” zero-hours contracts, and making flexible working a standard practice.

According to the poll, 73% of respondents support protections against unfair dismissal from the first day of employment, while 71% agree with banning zero-hours contracts. Additionally, 73% favor flexible working arrangements, including adjustable start and finish times and remote work options.

TUC regional secretary for the East of England, Sam Gurney, emphasized the bill's popularity, calling it a “vote winner.”

“Opponents of the bill are out of touch with the public here in the East," he said. "These policies have widespread support across the political spectrum.”
