List accomplishments or resign, Musk tells US federal workers

Federal employees received an email on Saturday instructing them to list their accomplishments from the past week or face possible resignation, marking another step in the Trump administration’s efforts to restructure the federal workforce.

The message followed a tweet from billionaire and Trump ally Elon Musk, who stated that government workers would soon receive an email requesting details on their weekly contributions. "Failure to respond will be taken as a resignation," Musk warned.

Musk has been spearheading an initiative to significantly reduce government spending through budget cuts and workforce reductions.

The email, titled "What did you do last week?" was sent by HR shortly after Trump addressed the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). The Office of Personnel Management (OPM), which oversees federal human resources, later confirmed its authenticity in a statement to CBS.

"As part of the Trump Administration’s commitment to an efficient and accountable workforce, OPM is requesting employees submit a brief summary of their weekly work by Monday, CC’ing their manager. Agencies will determine any next steps," the statement read.

A copy of the email obtained by the BBC instructed employees to outline their achievements in five bullet points—without disclosing classified information—by midnight on Monday. However, it did not specify whether failing to comply would be considered a resignation.

The American Federation of Government Employees, the largest union representing federal workers, condemned the directive as "cruel and disrespectful," vowing to challenge any "unlawful terminations."

Union president Everett Kelley accused Musk and the Trump administration of disregarding federal employees and the essential services they provide.

Meanwhile, newly appointed FBI Director Kash Patel instructed FBI personnel to refrain from responding to the OPM email. In a separate message obtained by CBS News, Patel stated that all reviews within the agency would be conducted under established FBI protocols.

During his CPAC speech, Trump defended the cuts, arguing that many federal employees were inefficient, especially those who worked remotely.

"We're removing all unnecessary, incompetent, and corrupt bureaucrats from the federal workforce," Trump told supporters. "We want to make government smaller, more efficient, and keep only the best people."

Musk’s team has reportedly made sweeping changes to the federal infrastructure with the White House’s backing, through an initiative called the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

In recent weeks, thousands of government employees from agencies such as the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the Pentagon, and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have been dismissed.

The directive mirrors Musk’s management style at Twitter (now X), where he implemented similar ultimatums, including his infamous demand for employees to commit to an "extremely hardcore" work environment or resign.

Trump has consistently praised Musk’s efforts to downsize the federal workforce.

In a Truth Social post, Trump commended Musk’s approach, stating that he was doing a "great job" in cutting government size and encouraging him to be "even more aggressive" in his efforts.
