AHMM’s proposal for a nine-storey life sciences development in Whitechapel has been narrowly approved by Tower Hamlets council. During a meeting of the council’s strategic development committee, five members voted in favor while four opposed the planning officers’ recommendation to approve the project.
Designed for life sciences developer Lateral, the scheme at 100-134 Cavell Street will feature 9,500 square meters of combined laboratory and office space. The project involves demolishing an existing two-story former clothing factory, built in 1916, which is not listed as a heritage site but is considered a non-designated heritage asset.
Since 2022, the building has primarily been used by property guardians—individuals who occupy vacant properties at reduced rents to maintain them and prevent squatting.
Planning officers commended AHMM’s design, describing it as high quality and noting its potential to enhance the surrounding public spaces. They also highlighted how the development aligns with the council’s broader objective of establishing a life sciences hub in Whitechapel.
Additionally, the project will include affordable workspaces and a ground-floor “Knowledge Centre,” designed to accommodate seminars, educational activities, and science exhibitions.
