A Leicester man has been sentenced to nearly two years in prison after being caught taking driving theory tests on behalf of others in exchange for payment.

Aaron Kumar, 28, of Cambridge Street, Leicester, pleaded guilty to six counts of fraud by false representation at Northampton Crown Court. The court heard that between 2021 and 2024, Kumar took tests at multiple centres across the country, including in Corby and Northampton, charging clients £250 plus expenses.

Kumar’s fraudulent activities came to an end on 15 January 2024, when staff at Corby’s Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) centre recognised him and alerted police. Officers arrived while he was completing a test and questioned him about his identity. He initially claimed to be the person registered for the test but quickly admitted the truth when challenged.

As a result, Kumar was sentenced to one year and ten months in prison. He was also disqualified from obtaining or holding a driving licence for three years and eleven months and ordered to pay £3,296 in prosecution costs.

Investigating officer PC Harry Cory welcomed the sentencing, stating: “I am pleased that Aaron Kumar has been jailed, as it goes to show that economic crime does not pay and that you will eventually be caught and brought to justice.”

He also condemned those who paid Kumar to take their tests, calling the act “disgraceful.” He added: “Driving is a privilege which is earned through both a theory and practical test, and no one should be able to skip out on either.”

Authorities continue to urge the public to report any suspected cases of fraudulent activity related to driving tests.
