Bollywood superstar Salman Khan has sparked controversy after being spotted wearing a limited edition 'Ram Janmabhoomi' watch during the promotions of his upcoming film Sikandar. Now, Barelvi cleric and All India Muslim Jamaat president Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi has criticized the actor, calling his action 'un-Islamic.'
In an official statement, Maulana Razvi stated that wearing the watch is "illegal" in Islam. "I have been asked about Shariat's ruling on Salman Khan's act. As per Shariat, wearing a Ram Edition watch designed for the promotion of the Ram Mandir is forbidden (haram) for a Muslim," he said, according to PTI.
He further emphasized that since Salman is a widely influential star with a large Muslim fanbase, he should refrain from engaging in actions that go against Islamic teachings. "Engaging in un-Islamic activities contradicts Shariat. He should avoid such actions and seek repentance," the cleric added.
As of now, Salman and his team have not issued an official response to the controversy.
For context, the limited edition watch, priced at ₹34 lakh, features a detailed motif of the Ram Janmabhoomi temple in Ayodhya on the dial, while the bezel is engraved with Hindu deities. Only 49 units of this exclusive watch were produced, one of which is owned by Salman.
In a past interview, the Kick actor revealed that the watch was a gift from his mother, Salma Khan, who was born as Sushila Charak into a Hindu family.
On the professional front, Salman is preparing for the release of Sikandar, a highly anticipated film featuring Rashmika Mandanna, Kajal Aggarwal, Sathyaraj, Sharman Joshi, and others in key roles. Directed by Ghajini filmmaker AR Murugadoss, the movie is set to premiere on March 30, coinciding with the Eid festivities.
