A senior Government minister who once advocated for abolishing the monarchy has now changed her stance.
Lisa Nandy, who had pledged to vote for the monarchy's abolition during the 2020 Labour leadership race, clarified that while it wouldn't have been a priority, she would support such a move if a referendum were held.
Asked by ITV’s Good Morning Britain on Wednesday whether her views had evolved, Nandy confirmed, “I have, actually, yeah.” She explained that her experience working closely with the royal family on issues like knife crime prevention and the UK Soft Power Council had influenced her change of heart.
Nandy acknowledged that while she still believes in the principle of the people choosing their leaders, her views on the monarchy have shifted.
“But I think the monarchy under the Queen and under this current King command strong public support.
“I think right now, if you look at the turmoil going on in the world, then we do need a royal family who are able to help us to deliver the benefits to Britain.
“So I’m not afraid to say when I change my mind and I have changed my mind about that.”
