The British Bangladeshi Society of Croydon (BBSC) hosted a joyous Eid al-Adha reunion celebration and civic reception on Sunday, honouring Councillor Mohammed Islam, the newly appointed Deputy Civic Mayor of Croydon.
The event, organised by Jubayer Kabir and chaired by BBSC Chair Nasar Ali, brought together community members, local leaders, and civic figures in a vibrant display of cultural pride and civic unity.
Distinguished guests in attendance included former Mayor of Croydon, Cllr Humayun Kabir; Dr Shahanoor Khan, Freeman of the City of London; Angur Ali, Director of Brick Lane Mosque; retired Metropolitan Police Officer, Abdul Mutalib Malik; Muktar Ali; Mayoral candidate Cllr Rowenna Davis; and Croydon councillors Janet Campbell, Catherine Wilson, Chrishni Reshekaron, Appu Srinivasan, and Manju Shahul Hameed.
The programme commenced with a recitation from the Holy Qur’an by Hafiz Zaakir Islam, followed by the national anthems. Invited guests delivered speeches praising Councillor Mohammed Islam's long-standing commitment to public service, grassroots engagement, and his dedication to the needs of local residents.
In his address, Councillor Islam expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the BBSC for the recognition, stating he was deeply honoured to be acknowledged by the community he grew up in and proudly serves.
The event highlighted the significant role of British Bangladeshis in Croydon's civic life and celebrated the enduring spirit of service, inclusion, and community leadership that continues to shape the borough's diverse society.
