Since the beginning of the year, Cambridgeshire Police have arrested more than 300 people on suspicion of drink or drug-driving. Among those arrested was a mother caught drug-driving with her baby in Cambridge, and a man in Wisbech who crashed into several parked cars.
Officers are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any concerns about drink- or drug-driving by calling a confidential 24-hour hotline at 0800 032 0845. They stress that early intervention can help prevent serious or even fatal incidents on the roads.
PC Adrian Boddington of Cambridgeshire Police stated, “Every drink-drive arrest represents a potential tragedy narrowly avoided — lives that could have been lost or changed forever.”
The force has expressed concern about increased temptations to drink-drive during the summer, when more social events typically take place. PC Boddington advised, “Please consider using a designated driver or pre-booking taxis so that there’s no temptation to drive while possibly over the legal limit. Before you get behind the wheel, please ask yourself — is it really worth the risk?”
Other recent arrests by the force include a driver in Peterborough who was found to be twice over the legal limit after consuming half a bottle of rum on a night out, and another individual in Huntingdon who crashed into traffic lights while also twice over the limit.
Cambridgeshire Police have confirmed they will continue proactive patrols across the county throughout the summer, carrying out roadside breathalyser tests to catch offenders.
Those convicted of drink- or drug-driving face serious consequences, including a minimum 12-month driving ban, heavy fines, and up to six months in prison.
