Sri Lankan Cricket's membership in the International Cricket Council (ICC) has been suspended immediately after the world sports body found “serious breach” of political interference in the sport.
A statement issued by the ICC said, “Sri Lanka Cricket is in serious breach of its obligations as a Member”.
The global body then emphasized its concerns about “the requirement to manage its affairs autonomously and ensure that there is no government interference in the governance, regulation and/or administration of cricket in Sri Lanka”.
Sri Lankan cricket has been in crisis for many years, but the situation worsened significantly this month following the team's poor performance at Cricket World Cup Sri Lanka was eliminated after winning only 2 matches and losing 7 matches.
The sport has been calumniate by accusations of political interference for years, while continuing to maintain close ties with military personnel accused of war crimes.
It's not just cricket. Earlier this year, FIFA also suspended Sri Lanka following "undue interference by a third party" in an election organized by the federation. The ban was finally lifted in August, although FIFA said it would continue to closely monitor developments in Sri Lankan football.
