  • Ed Davey demands faster, bolder action on NHS and social care

Ed Davey assured the Liberal Democrat conference that his party will be the antidote to Keir Starmer's "pessimism and defeatism" by stating that the government must "act faster and be much bolder" in addressing the challenges facing the UK.

The leader of the Liberal Democrats reiterated his promise to concentrate on pressing ministers to take action on the NHS and social care, and he said he would attempt to be collaborative while cautioning against what he called a short-term Treasury thinking on investment.

Presenting to an occupied conference room in Brighton, Davey revelled in the aftermath of his party's extraordinarily prosperous general election victory, which saw them rise from 15 to 72 MPs. He expressed his desire to secure additional Tory-held seats and "write the Conservative party into the annals of history."Davey stood in front of his MPs, who had entered the platform to thunderous ovation, and emphasised the enormous benefits.

another key election moment for his party, the release of a highly personal campaign video showing him with his disabled 16-year-old son, John, for whom he jointly cares, and talking about how he had cared for his mother as a child.

Aides have said that since the video was released, other carers have been in touch on a near daily basis to share their stories.

Among those who had got in touch, Davey said, was a 15-year-old boy, Joseph, who had cared for his mother, who has MS, since he was five.

“Joseph wrote to me: ‘I wanted you to know that people like yourself are everywhere. Quiet and silenced but we are still here,’” Davey told the audience.

Reiterating his plea for cross-party efforts to transform social and personal care, Davey said he felt compelled to discuss the topic because neither the king's address nor Labour's manifesto made any mention of it.

However, Davey noted that carers were included in Keir Starmer's initial prime minister's questions. Since I ensured that they would. Prime Minister: I am prepared to collaborate with you to complete the task at hand if you are willing to find a solution.
